How Antimicrobial Fabric Is Made: Masterbatch, Yarn or Fabric

By PLATARI Technical Team·6 min read·Updated 2026

Antimicrobial fabric can be bought at three different stages of the supply chain — as masterbatch, as treated yarn, or as finished fabric. Which one you buy depends on where you sit in the chain. Here's how each is made and who it suits.

The three supply forms

Buy it as…

  • Masterbatch — concentrated additive pellets, blended into fiber at the spinning stage.
  • Yarn — antibacterial performance already spun into the yarn, ready to knit or weave.
  • Finished fabric — knitted / woven fabric, ready to cut and sew.

1. Masterbatch — for fiber & yarn spinners

An antimicrobial masterbatch is a concentrated carrier (e.g. nylon or polyester based) loaded with the active. Spinners meter it into the polymer melt, so the active is distributed inside the fiber. This "built-in" route is why the performance is wash-durable rather than a surface coating. Best for fiber/yarn producers who want to make their own functional yarn.

2. Treated yarn — for knitters & weavers

If you don't spin fiber yourself, buy the performance already in the yarn. You knit or weave it into your own fabric constructions. Best for mills and converters.

3. Finished fabric — for apparel makers & brands

The most turnkey option: buy finished antibacterial fabric in your required weight, color and construction, ready to cut and sew. Best for garment factories and brands.

Why "built into the fiber" matters

Because PLATARI's approach is a pre-treatment that puts the active into the fiber (via masterbatch/yarn), the antibacterial and deodorization performance is wash-durable — it doesn't sit on the surface where it can wash off. See does antimicrobial fabric wash out?

Frequently asked questions

What is antimicrobial masterbatch?

A concentrated additive in pellet form (carrier plus active) that fiber spinners blend into the polymer melt, so the antibacterial performance is built into the fiber rather than coated on the surface. It is the starting point for making functional yarn.

Should I buy masterbatch, yarn or fabric?

It depends where you sit: fiber/yarn spinners buy masterbatch, knitters/weavers buy yarn, and garment factories or brands buy finished fabric. PLATARI supplies all three.

Is fiber-based antibacterial better than a coating?

For durability, yes. Performance built into the fiber (via masterbatch/yarn) is wash-durable, whereas a surface coating can wash off over time.
