The short answer
Antibacterial refers specifically to activity against bacteria. Antimicrobial is the broader umbrella term — activity against microbes in general, which can include bacteria, mold and mildew. In textiles, most performance data is reported as an antibacterial rate (against specific bacteria) plus, separately, anti-mold and deodorization figures.
In plain terms
- Antibacterial fabric — tested to reduce specific bacteria (e.g. S. aureus, E. coli).
- Antimicrobial fabric — the broader claim; may also cover mold / mildew resistance.
- Deodorization — a separate property: how much odor (e.g. ammonia) the fabric reduces.
Why the wording matters when you source
Buyers and brands should match the claim to the test. If a supplier says "antimicrobial", ask which organisms were tested and to what standard. A credible functional fabric comes with third-party reports naming the organism, the method and the reduction percentage — not just a marketing word.
How the performance is tested
Reputable testing uses recognized methods and independent labs. PLATARI's platinum-grade functional fabric is independently SGS-tested:
| Property | Result | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Antibacterial rate | 99.9% | SGS-tested against common bacteria |
| Deodorization | 96% | Ammonia odor reduction |
| Durability | Built into the fiber | Pre-treatment, wash-durable |
Coating vs "built into the fiber"
Two fabrics can both claim "antimicrobial" but behave very differently after washing. A surface coating can wash off over time; performance built into the fiber (a pre-treatment approach) is far more wash-durable. This is one of the most important things to check — see does antimicrobial fabric wash out?
What to specify when you buy
- The organism(s) tested and the reduction percentage.
- The test standard / lab (e.g. SGS, with a report number).
- Durability — coating vs built-into-fiber, and wash cycles tested.
- Supply form — masterbatch, yarn or finished fabric (see how it's made).

Frequently asked questions
Is antimicrobial fabric the same as antibacterial fabric?
Not exactly. Antibacterial specifically means activity against bacteria, while antimicrobial is broader and can include mold and mildew. In practice, most fabric performance is reported as an antibacterial rate against named bacteria, plus separate deodorization and anti-mold figures.
How is antibacterial fabric performance measured?
By independent labs using recognized methods, which name the organism, the method and the reduction percentage. PLATARI is SGS-tested at 99.9% antibacterial and 96% deodorization.
Does "antimicrobial" mean it protects my health?
No. These are material-property figures (antibacterial rate, deodorization) describing the fabric's physical performance under test conditions — not medical or health claims.
