Coating vs built into the fiber
There are two broad ways to make a fabric antibacterial, and they age very differently:
| Approach | How it works | Wash durability |
|---|---|---|
| Surface coating / finish | Active applied to the fabric surface after it's made | Can wash off over time |
| Built into the fiber (pre-treatment) | Active is inside the fiber, from the masterbatch / spinning stage | Wash-durable — doesn't sit on the surface |
Why the "built-in" route lasts
A surface finish sits on the outside of the fabric, exactly where mechanical washing, detergent and abrasion attack it. When the active is distributed inside the fiber (see how antimicrobial fabric is made), washing removes far less of it — so the performance holds up over the garment's life.
What to ask a supplier about durability
- Is the performance a coating or built into the fiber? (Built-in lasts longer.)
- Was it tested after washing? Ask for antibacterial results after a stated number of wash cycles.
- What's the test standard and report number? Third-party (e.g. SGS) with a report you can verify.
- What's the antibacterial rate? PLATARI: SGS 99.9% antibacterial, 96% deodorization.
The takeaway
- Not all "antimicrobial fabric" is equally durable.
- Surface coatings can wash off; fiber-built performance is wash-durable.
- Always ask for post-wash test data and a third-party report.

Frequently asked questions
Does antimicrobial fabric wash out?
It depends how it's made. A surface coating or finish can wash off over time, but performance built into the fiber (a pre-treatment approach, as with PLATARI) is wash-durable because the active is inside the fiber rather than on the surface.
How long does the antibacterial effect last?
For fiber-built fabric the performance is designed to last the useful life of the garment. Ask your supplier for antibacterial results tested after a specific number of wash cycles.
How can I tell if a fabric is coated or built-in?
Ask the supplier directly, and ask for post-wash test data. A wash-durable, fiber-built fabric will have antibacterial results that hold up after repeated washing.
